Improve the World, Support Great Charities!

Hawaii's public schools rank down there with Mississippi at the bottom of the pile and Maui is no different.

Maui does have the usual suspects of private education, Waldorf, Montessori, church related private schools along with upcountry's Seabury.

If you have a family or plan to have a family, you would be wise to add the cost of private school into your cost of living equation.

I'll echo the warning, if you are a working class family, Maui may not be the best choice for you!

Here is a brief list of the major outlets for private education:

  • Christian preschools are a dime a dozen, just check the yellow pages, there are too many for me to have the patience to list them all.
  • Haleakala Waldorf School - Upcountry in Kula, Preschool - Grade 8, 808-878-2511.
  • Montessori of Maui - near Makawao, 808-573-0374.
  • Seabury Hall - above Makawao, Grades 6 - 12, 808-572-7235.
  • St. Anthony Junior & High School - Wailuku, 808-244-4190.
  • Carden Academy of Maui - Pukalani (808-573-6651) & Lahaina (808-667-0422), Kindergarten - 7th.
  • The Preschool at Kapalua - West Maui, faith based (not sure specifically what they mean by that), world's best view from a preschool, 808-669-5577. It's photo is at the top of this page. Facing the opposite direction, just a few feet away, is D.T. Flemming Beach Park.
  • Maui Prep - Napili in West Maui, 9 miles north of Lahaina. A new school set to compete with St. Anthony and Carden. Maui Prep has financial support from Maui Land and Pine.

This is just a list of the main choices, not to be interpreted as an endorsement as I have no personal experience with any of them. For junior and senior high private education, St. Anthony and Seabury are about it, though Maui Prep hopes to expand. As for public schools on Maui, I also have no personal experience with any of them. I'm sure you can find some very good teachers at public schools. It's just hard to get around the fact that Hawaii public schools rank so low nationally.
