Traditionally Hawaii has had a very low violent crime rate with a middle of the road theft rate. Mostly crooks sneaking around and cockaroaching things when no one is looking. This has meant that Hawaii is a very safe place to live.

Things are changing thanks to "ice" (crystal meth). Hawaii has one of the highest meth rates in the country and there is no way around it, the meth problem has hit epidemic proportions. This is leading to a steady increase in crime. It's still safer than most US cities and we can only pray that things get turned around before it gets worse.

My best guess is that as of August 2005 the meth problem is only just beginning and will continue to intensify. It's too cheap, too powerful, and Maui is too tolerant of drug use in general thanks to a very large party crowd demographic.

That said, I currently feel very safe on Maui, but do have great concern that Maui is about to lose her innocence.
